１）人生の歩みにおけるさまざまな節目において躓いたり立ち止まったりする人々と、その人生の歩みを支えようとする支援者たちの間で遂行される日常的相互行為を対象として、ドラマトゥルギー（演技論・演出論）的観点で質的フィールド研究を行っています。そうした相互行為からは、周囲を取り巻くモノや他者との、あるいは、自己自身の身体や過去の記憶との新たな共生のあり方を追い求める人々の姿を見て取ることができます。
２）人生の節目で行われる儀礼（あるいはその痕跡）とそれに関連する神話的言説の構造を分析することで、その儀礼の意味や機能を明らかにする神話学研究も行っています。

研究の一般的背景：人新世時代とも言われる現代社会の諸問題の多くは、経済や社会、あるいは人間のモラルや自然科学など、通常は区別される領域が複雑に絡み合っている場所において生じています。たとえば環境問題はその典型例でしょう。このような現代の諸問題に取り組むためには、人間、自然科学、社会、経済という四つの基本カテゴリーのあいだの複雑なありようを、一貫した視野のもとで総合的に理解する新たな思考枠組みを構築する必要があると考えています。

Research topics: basic theoretical research to understand various human activities, such as natural science, philosophy and art, on the basis of human sociality.

General background to research: many of the problems of contemporary society, also known as the Anthropocene era, arise where usually distinct areas, such as economy, society, human morality and the natural sciences are intricately intertwined. Environmental problems, for example, are a typical instance of this. In order to approach these contemporary problems, we believe it is necessary to construct a new framework for thinking that comprehensively understands the complexities between the four basic categories of human beings, natural science, society and the economy from a coherent perspective.

Kyosei of disaster volunteers with people and things have been investigated from the perspective of group dynamics; collaborative practices followed by action research at various phases (i.e., search & rescue, recovery, revitalization, and preparedness) of disaster fields. We have attempted to contribute, academically and practically, to the betterment of the disaster field. We participate in disaster volunteer activities such as, for instance, disaster relief in an emergency, relaying supports from disaster fields in the past to the current fields, transferring and remembering experiences of disaster, long-term recovery and revitalization, and disaster preparedness in community. At the same time, we theoretically analyze their socio-cultural and historical backgrounds, Currently, we focus on domestic disaster fields after Kumamoto Earthquake, Great East Japan Earthquake, Niigata Chuetsu Earthquake, and Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, as well as international disaster fields after Taiwan Chi-Chi Earthquake.

　Yasuyuki　Gondo is an associate professor of Osaka university department of human sciences since 2007. He started his carrier as gerontologist in 1993 by start working at the Tokyo metropolitan institute of gerontology. He got Ph.D. by papers about cognitive aging. He joyed Tokyo centenarian study in 1999. Since then he interviews more than 400 centenarians. He started larger epidemiological longitudinal study named (Septuagenarian, Octogenarian, Nonagenarian Investigation with Centenarian) with collaborators in multi-disciplinal researchers all over Japan in 2010. The main purposes of he SONIC study are to clarify aging-related changes in multiple domains of human functioning and the dynamics of interaction among these domains throughout the extreme old age period and to identify the factors influencing healthy longevity, including psychological well-being.

Studied Communication (MSc) and Discourse Analysis (PhD) in the UK, Kondo has looked at social psychological subjects from constructionists’ point of views. Kondo has been hugely interested in the process of justifications of social realities amongst ordinary people (namely ideology), such as the idea of modern monarchism (Constitutional Monarchy). At Osaka University, working as a coordinator of an English speaking exchange program, Kondo also looks at International Student Education and Global Competency Education. He therefore researches some related topics, which includes tertiary education in English in non-English speaking countries. What is more, as a specialist of international student education, he plans and implements a number of university’s international strategies with several professors and administrators at Osaka. Kondo now dreams to focus on the meanings of internationalisation (and globalisation) of the education, using discursive techniques.

　I have been researching how endogenous recovery from disasters is possible while participating in actual relief activities. I am interested in how people in disaster-stricken areas, where it is difficult to envision a better future, can reconfirm the foundations that support the richness of their own lives and realize a better life, focusing on the receptive role of external supporters. My research methods include recovery curve interviews, in which survivors are asked to draw a curve representing events from the disaster to the present, and then interviewed while making sense of the curve, and surveys of the survivors themselves, in which they themselves are surveyed about their own lives and recovery. Recently, I have been focusing on the nature of disaster volunteer activities immediately after a disaster and studying how a better mutual aid society is possible in today’s society.

I am investigating varied aspects of Latin American culture, communing with the local people by use of the guitar and local languages (Spanish and Mapuche). The main objective of the classes I hold at the University resides in considering how to realize KYOSEI society, based on the empowerment of the personal “genuine way of being”, making use of  “music” and “dialogue” as the principal techniques to achieve a fluent and mutual communication with the students.
On the other hand, as a musician, I play different types of local guitars and sing songs of Latin America to introduce Latin American music to the Japanese people. Besides, I also compose and interpret my original songs in Spanish and Japanese with lyrics referring to topics such as Life, Peace and Kyosei.

Beverley’s　current　research　projects　focus　on　health,　disease　and　illness.  Her disciplinary background is sociology. Beverley is involved in three projects that are concerned with patient and public involvement (PPI) in medical practice, research and policy. One project is joint research with a team at the University of Oxford and aims at designing a sustainable engagement platform for patient, public and health care professionals (HCPs) to be involved in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies in health care. She is also working with some of the same researchers, affiliated with the Osaka University School of Medicine, on two other PPI projects. On is also in collaboration with the University of Oxford and focuses on the rare diseases patient space.
Another major project is the Osaka University UNESCO Chair in Global Health and Education, which Beverley leads. The Chair is leading three projects working with international partners. One is on the implementation of comprehensive sexuality education, another explores networks for planetary health and a third is in collaboration with the WHO Kobe office and is concerned with adolescent mental health. Beverley is a qualitative researcher.

Christian Etzrodt’s research has focused on Western and non-Western sociological theories. He is now interested in theorizing patriarchy, white supremacy, empire, heterosexuality, and ability alongside capitalism. These topics are related to his research interests in education about the uneasy relationship between the education for the masses (with a focus on memorization) and elite education (with a focus on critical thinking) on the one hand, and multicultural education (with a focus on the coexistence of different cultures) and global citizenship education (with a focus on a cosmopolitan culture) on the other. He is furthermore analyzing the influence of elite networks on globalization and possible strategies of reforming our banking system.

I do pieces of fieldwork-based research in education in African countries with being sensitive to people’s lives there, and have principally carried out such fieldwork in Kenyan Maasai land with colleagues and students since 1999. I recently started another research work in the slum areas of Nairobi, focusing on low-fee private/unrecognized schools. A research project on education for vulnerable children such as refugees’ children and children with disability is my recent concern and in collaboration with other researchers we conduct field study in Africa (South Sudan, Kenya, Malawi, South Africa), Middle East (Turkey/Syria, Iran/Afghanistan) and Asia (Laos, Bangladesh, India).  We also cover educational issues in Japan from global perspectives.

Inspired by the experience of helping to implement anti-malaria measures in Vanuatu as a Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteer, I stayed on for some time to conduct fieldwork on traditional medicine and culture.  Since then, my fieldwork has expanded to include Laos, and my research has grown to include the relationships between magic and science, international cooperation and cultural anthropology, and NGOs and voluntarism, as well as the use of mosquito nets in local communities.  I am actively involved in international medical cooperation, and I have served as both a WHO short term consultant for the lymphatic filariasis control project in Samoa and Fiji and a JICA short term expert for the malaria control project in Myanmar.

My research focus is on water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) issues both in developing countries (particularly Africa) and in Japan. I have also started research on menstrual wellbeing and school health.

In a globalizing society, the transformation of China into a regional superpower has a great influence not only on local geopolitical order in Asia but also on international society.  China’s economic growth and world-leading aging population have created a challenging policy, public provision, and global diplomacy environment. In this context, we explore various social issues, including population demographics, health, environment, food safety, information/censorship, disaster impacts (Sichuan earthquake for example), Olympics, as core areas of study. Associated with these issues are multi-disciplinary considerations such as international relations, social development studies, international health and population, social policy, political science, sociology, gerontology, and gender studies. Our research area is not limited to China, however, and we perform international collaborative investigations with researchers from New Zealand, Australia, United States, Europe, and the Central Asian Silk Road area. We place importance on rigorous research methodology, and encourage our researchers to obtain supplementary language skills to support research, including proficiency in English, Chinese and other languages and emphasize an importance on field work and cultural competence.

My main research interests include social welfare for older people and people with disabilities, cross-generational care in East Asia. The underlying idea behind my research is to assess whether the idea of “cross-generational and multi-functional care” in Japan such as Kochi-style Welfare, which has gained attention in recent years, can be used in emerging East Asian countries that are having difficulties in establishing large-scale welfare facilities, and whether learning communities can be created for use in East Asian countries by linking rural communities in emerging East Asian countries with the practices in the various regions of Japan.

My major is Japanese modern and contemporary history. Since 2004, I am the coordinator of the Association for the Study of Contemporary Asian Women’s History and Gender( CAWA ) , which has been promoting historical study on “the Cold War and Gender.” At present I am working for two research projects; In the “study on the personal injury during Allied occupation of Japan at the end of World War II”, I am investigating people’s experiences during the occupation era and compensation claim movement which started since the end of occupation. In the “international women’s movement during the Cold War era”, I am making researches on not only the world-wide women’s organization like Women’s International Democratic Federation ( WIDF) and the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), but also various grass-roots women’s groups all over the world.
